type VI secretion system

Accession VIRO:0000171
Synonym(s)T6SS
DefinitionA contractile, phage-related nanomachine used by Gram-negative bacteria in what can be referred to as interbacterial warfare. This system delivers effectors that are usually toxic proteins in a single step by piercing the cell membranes of eukaryotic and bacterial cells and firing their ammunition. The basic machinery is coded by 13 conserved core proteins that contribute to its structure. The structure of the secretion system generally consists of a bacteriophage-like tail and an anchor that attaches the tail to the bacterial cell envelope.
