Sec secretion system

Accession VIRO:0000310
Synonym(s)general secretory pathway
DefinitionA one-step secretion system used to transport unfolded proteins across the cytoplasmic membrane. Along with the Tat secretory pathway, it is the most common protein secretion system and is conserved across bacteria, archaea, and eukarya. Secreted products usually remain in the periplasm or inner membrane, but in Gram-negative bacteria, substances can be transported extracellularly using another secretion system. The system comprises three parts: a protein-targeting component, a motor protein, and the SecYEG translocase.
