Tat secretion system

Accession VIRO:0000311
Synonym(s)twin arginine translocation pathway
DefinitionA one-step secretion system used to transport folded proteins across the cytoplasmic membrane. Along with the Sec secretory pathway, it is the most common protein secretion system and is conserved across bacteria, archaea, and eukarya. Secreted products usually remain in the periplasm or inner membrane, but in Gram-negative bacteria, substances can be transported extracellularly using another secretion system. The system consists of two to three subunits: TatA, TatB, and TatC. In Gram-positive bacteria, TatA and TatB are combined into a single subunit.
