DefinitionMetformin is a first-line medication for type 2 diabetes. It has been shown to increase Gram-negative membrane permeability and enhance the entry of certain antibiotics, such as tetracyclines, beta-lactams, and rifampicin. Metformin is also able to inhibit antibiotic efflux pumps such as AcrAB-TolC and MdtK.
