fungal mitochondrial respiratory chain protein

Ontology CARD's Antibiotic Resistance Ontology
Accession ARO:3009199
DefinitionMitochrondrial electron transport chains are essential for cellular aerobic respiration in fungal organisms. These are a series of protein complexes which produce energy through the exergonic transfer of electrons from electron donors to electron receptors via redox reactions. They are associated with the citric acid cycle, fatty acid metabolism, and amino acid metabolism through aerobic respiration. Certain antibiotics, such as Azoxystrobin, target these proteins to block these reaction pathways to inhibit the formation of ATP, thus resulting in cell death. Mutations in these proteins are associated with antibiotic resistance by preventing the blocking mechanism of these antifungal drugs.
