DefinitionShiga toxin are A-B toxins produced by several enteric pathogens, most importantly Shigella dysenteriae (serotype 1 only) and Enterohaemorrhagic Escherichia coli (EHEC). Shiga toxins are important factors in disease pathogenesis and are responsible for the haemolytic uremic syndrome (HUS). B subunits form a pentameric structure binding to its cellular receptor.
