Definition | Chaperone-Usher pili use the chaperone-usher pathway to assemble their pili. These pili can be classified phylogenetically based on their usher protein sequence. There are six phylogenetic clades, including alpha-, beta-, gamma-, kappa, pi-, and sigma-fimbriae. The alpha-clade contains pili from the alternate chaperone-usher pili (Class 5 fimbriae). The beta-clade fimbriae are previously classified members of the fimbrial usher protein (FUP) cluster 7. The gamma-clade is subdivided into four clades: 1) type I fimbriae-like pili; 2) FUP cluster 2 adhesins; 3) FGL (long F1-G1 loop afimbrial) adhesins; and, 4) FUP family 10. The kappa-clade encodes flexible fimbriae, and contains proteins that assemble the F4, F5, and F8 fimbrial antigen. The pi-clade include the P pilus and other similar pili. The sigma-clade contains archaic chaperone-usher systems. |
