DefinitionEmbelin is a naturally occurring para-benzoquinone isolated from dried berries of Embelia ribes plants. Embelin has a wide spectrum of biological activities, including antioxidant, antitumor, anti-inflammatory, analgesic, anthelmintic, antifertility and antimicrobial. It was demonstrated to inhibit all tested metallo-beta-lactamases and showed an in vitro synergistic bactericidal effect with meropenem against metallo-beta-lactamases-producing bacteria. Embelin is a metal ion chelating agent.
