| Definition | Ribosomally synthesized and post-translationally modified peptides (RiPPs) are a large and structurally diverse superfamily of biologically active natural products. They are generated via ribosomal translation of a peptide-encoding gene and subsequent processing of the precursor peptide by dedicated enzymes that introduce a variety of post-translational modifications, including intramolecular cyclization, dehydration and formation of heterocycles. The modifications set the 3D shape of the peptides, facilitate interaction with the target and protect them from degradation by cellular peptidases. |
