| Definition | Peptidoglycan transpeptidase proteins involved in bacterial cell wall formation and which have decreased susceptibility to some beta-lactam antibiotics. These alternative transpeptidases are found in certain organisms, like Staphylococcus aureus, and have lower affinity for penicillin-like antibiotics, such as methicillin. In these organisms, these proteins do not bind to the beta-lactam ring and therefore transpeptidase activity continues in the presence of beta-lactams, thereby conferring resistance to these drugs. These proteins are commonly clinically associated with methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA). |
